A journey from Tallinn to a hotel on Saaremaa needs two plans to work together: the road journey and the ferry crossing. A map estimate alone does not tell you when you will reach your accommodation. Before confirming a transfer, agree who arranges the ferry, which vehicle will travel and how much flexibility your arrival needs.
Understand where the ferry actually takes you
The mainland crossing is Virtsu to Kuivastu. Kuivastu is on Muhu, not in Kuressaare. You continue by road across Muhu and the causeway to Saaremaa. Visit Estonia’s Muhu guide explains this connection. Give the operator your final accommodation address, rather than simply asking for “Saaremaa harbour”. A stop on Muhu and a hotel elsewhere on Saaremaa are different journeys.
Decide whether you want one vehicle throughout or separate transfers on either side. If considering separate vehicles, establish where passengers meet the second driver, who handles luggage and what happens if the crossing changes. Do not assume an island-side pickup has been arranged unless it is confirmed.
Agree who buys the ticket before paying for it
Ask whether the quotation includes the vehicle and passenger ferry tickets, who buys them and who manages changes. A private transfer quotation should make this clear; the ferry arrangements of a scheduled coach service should not be assumed to apply.
If you are asked to buy the tickets yourself, first obtain the confirmed vehicle details and passenger information from the transfer operator. Do not enter a guessed registration number or select a vehicle category merely because its name sounds right. Praamid uses vehicle registration recognition for e-ticket checks; its port guide describes the process. Keep the ticket confirmation accessible and agree who receives any service notifications.
Plan arrival time around the whole journey
Praamid gives an average crossing time of 27 minutes on the Saaremaa route in its official FAQ. This is the sailing segment, not a door-to-door estimate. Your plan must also include the drive to Virtsu, the operator’s current arrival and check-in requirements, waiting and loading, then the drive from Kuivastu to your destination.
Start with your actual constraint: a hotel reception deadline, an agreed dinner or an appointment. Tell the transfer operator about it before choosing a sailing. Ask for a departure plan with a sensible margin and an alternative if the preferred crossing is unavailable. A booking should not rely on the last possible connection when missing it would disrupt the rest of your trip.
Make changes and the return journey part of the agreement
Check the live timetable and service notices on Praamid close to travel. The FAQ currently allows e-ticket changes until 15 minutes before departure; that is a ticket-change deadline, not advice on when to arrive at the port. Check the applicable conditions again before purchase. If a sailing is missed, do not count on space on the next one.
For a return to Tallinn Airport or a passenger ferry, give the operator your onward departure details and required arrival time. Agree an earlier island departure where appropriate. For an excursion, decide which stops are essential and which can be shortened if travel takes longer. IMS guided trips by car, minibus or bus are arranged individually; programme, guide language, availability, duration and price require confirmation.
A useful message to send with your enquiry
“We need a transfer from [Tallinn pickup address] to [full island address] on [date], for [passengers] with [luggage]. We need to arrive by [time and reason]. Please confirm the vehicle, proposed ferry arrangements, whether tickets are included, who handles changes and the return plan.” Add child-seat or mobility needs at this stage.
Use the transfer enquiry and quick calculator to start planning, but ask for a confirmed quotation explaining ferry costs and any agreed waiting or stops. For sightseeing rather than a direct transfer, send your priorities through our guided excursions page. Confirm the complete journey before independently buying a ferry ticket.
